SATA Fest:
Between the Between

{間之間}

Between
art and society, time unfolds and lingers.

From traditional seal carving, the fermentation of tea leaves, to the connection between neighbourhood and the grocery store, and the human–machine collaboration in letterpress printing— these four local shops operate without advanced systems, yet preserve a different sense of time. In this fast-paced city, can we take a moment to experience “time” that cannot be fully measured?

The Human Crank translates the pressing craft and human-machine collaboration of traditional letterpress printing into a tactile interface with physical resistance, exploring how time is materialized through the confrontation between flesh and matter.

Within the installation, the voice of Mr. Yim, the master of Kwong Wah Printing, is placed on the brink of vanishing. To discern the whisper, viewers must grip a handle embedded with metal types and continuously drive the wheel. Here, time becomes physical labor; the continuation of sound depends entirely on the viewer's immediate commitment.

Through sustained exertion, the historical types seem to rearrange within the palm. This typesetting, however, takes effect not on paper, but at the boundaries of bodily perception. The resulting red imprints on the skin constitute a temporal imprint born from the rubbing of body, technology, and time. Upon leaving, viewers are assimilated as mobile components of "The Human Crank," carrying this awakened memory into the everyday world.
